Van der Perren was the flag bearer for Belgium at the 2006 Winter Olympics. He is married to British skater Jenna McCorkell. As of January 2010 he was ranked 7th in the world. He was the flag bearer for Belgium at the 2006 Winter Olympics and Belgium at the 2010 Winter Olympics. The last time Belgium got Gold for figure skating, was for the pairs and it was in 1948.
